What Is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating is dry paint — a finely ground powder that is applied directly to the surface of metals to be coated. Each powder particle contains the necessary resin, pigment, modifiers and curing agent — It contains no solvents.  The powder is applied electro statically by charging the powder particles and applying them directly to the grounded part.  The charged powder adheres to the surface until it enters a curing oven where the powder melts, bonds and cures to the desired surface characteristic. The result is coating which provides a uniform, durable, high quality finish.

Why Powder Coating?

Quality - Powder is cost effective and is superior to most liquid coatings for:
  • Chip resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Impact resistance
  • Adhesion
  • Ultraviolet resistance
  • Weather lasting

Environmental Friendly?

Unlike liquid finishing, powder coating does not contain or require the use of toxic solvents and produces little, if any, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) into the atmosphere. No special venting or filtering systems are required, plus any unused or over sprayed powder can be recovered and recycled, requiring no hazardous cleanup.

What can be Powder Coated?

Any objects made from aluminum, steel, brass, copper, bronze, titanium, magnesium, wrought iron ,stainless, or any other form of metal.

Some objects may require additional handling and/or surface restoration before coating.  We will explain these procedures to you when we examine the piece to be coated.

What kind of preparation work is needed before Powder Coating?

We do all of our own sand blasting, and we can sand blast painted objects, rusty objects, anything that can handle the sandblasting process, and if needed we can repair holes and structural weaknesses with welding.

Is Powder Coating heat safe?

We can powder coat BBQ's and Fireplaces, so yes, certain types are.

Is Powder Coating harder than paint?

Actually no, and that is precisely why it is superior to paint finishes. Paint has a tendency to chip, but powder coating retains elasticity, making it far more durable and resistant to chipping and flaking while still maintaining a good scratch resistance.

Will Powder Coated items rust?

While any powder-coated item has good protection from rust, there are many variables. Items with very sharp edges or items exposed to rough use may affect the life of the powder coated item. For outdoor use we recommend a two-coat system for best long-term protection.

How long will Powder Coating last?

This is a question even our powder suppliers can’t answer.  Depending on use or abuse of the part or item, the environment the item is used in, and care and maintenance of the item, parts can last many years or become worn in a short time.

What colors are available?

We have access to 6500 different colors in a variety of finishes including metallic, glosses, textured, candies, and flat. In addition, we work with a variety of vendors and can order special colors upon request.

Can you match my paint color?

Yes we can.

How much does it cost?

Since we are a custom job shop, cost will vary depending on the size and complexity of the product. We try to maintain a uniform pricing policy for basic items such as hand railings, motorcycle and bicycle frames and wheels but the actual cost will ultimately depend on the material and condition of the item.  We will be happy to give you a “ballpark” estimate by phone, fax, or email. We do however maintain a minimum charge of $50 for one coat and $70 for two coats on any item. Minimums apply per color.
